When 9mm makes sense
9mm is a strong step up from 6mm: noticeably tougher, while still light enough to handle and install without special equipment. It suits skylights, machine guarding, and general security glazing where strength matters but you don't need maximum rigidity.
At roughly 2.2 lbs per square foot, a 4' x 8' sheet lands around 70 lbs — a one-or-two-person lift depending on access, and easy to cut and drill with standard shop tools.

When 12mm makes sense
12mm is our thickest, heaviest-duty sheet — suited to larger unsupported spans, high-traffic security applications, and structural panels where extra rigidity pays off. It's roughly 35% heavier than 9mm per square foot, so it's worth confirming the application needs it before you specify it.
That works out to about 2.95 lbs per square foot, or roughly 94 lbs for a full 4' x 8' sheet. Plan for two people on installation — but note it's still dramatically lighter than glass at the same thickness, which is usually the whole reason for specifying polycarbonate in the first place.

A quick fact worth knowing: polycarbonate ≠ bulletproof glass
Both are highly impact- and forced-entry-resistant, but neither is a certified bullet-resistant product on its own. UL 752-rated ballistic glazing uses laminated assemblies around 1" (25mm) or thicker. If a project has an actual ballistic requirement, monolithic sheet at either thickness is not the right specification — talk to us and we'll point you in the right direction.
